Impeachment witness to meet with Senate GOP Tuesday

A Republican witnesses from the House impeachment inquiry will join the Senate Republican lunch on Tuesday.

Jonathan Turley, who testified during a House Judiciary Committee hearing last week, will take part in the closed-door caucus lunch, a source familiar confirmed to The Hill.

The lunch comes as senators are ramping up their efforts to prepare for a likely impeachment trial in the Senate, which is expected to start as early as January. GOP senators had lunch last week with White House counsel Pat Cipollone.

Turley, a George Washington University law professor and opinion contributor for The Hill, was the only GOP witness invited to last week’s public hearing before the House Judiciary Committee. Three Democratic witnesses also took part in the hearing and argued that Trump’s attempt to push the Ukraine government for political favors was an abuse of power.

Turley has been critical of the impeachment process, particularly what he sees as an accelerated timeline by Speaker Nancy PelosiNancy PelosiHouse Democrats expected to unveil articles of impeachment Tuesday Impeachment witness to meet with Senate GOP Tuesday Press: Pelosi strikes back, hatred is a sin MORE (D-Calif.). Democrats are expected to give forthcoming articles of impeachment a committee vote as soon as this week.

Turley said during last week’s hearing that the Democratic impeachment push was “slipshod” and driven by partisan emotions. He also warned that impeaching Trump prematurely would set a “dangerous precedent.”

“If the House proceeds solely on the Ukrainian allegations, this impeachment would stand out among modern impeachments as the shortest proceeding, with the thinnest evidentiary record, and the narrowest grounds ever used to impeach a president,” he said at the time.

Turley has said since the hearing that he’s gotten “threatening messages,” including threats against his wife and dog, over his testimony.
