Augsburg has 3 semifinalists, in 8th place at WCWA National Championships
MARIETTA, Ga. — With three wrestlers still alive in the championship race, the Augsburg University women’s wrestling team stands in eighth place in the team standings after the first day of the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships on Friday at the Cobb County Civic Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Augsburg’s three seeded wrestlers all qualified for Saturday’s (2/8) semifinals in their weight classes, while five unseeded wrestlers were all eliminated in wrestleback action on Friday afternoon in the WCWA tournament, which features women’s wrestling programs from all three collegiate divisions — NCAA, NAIA and junior college.
Top-seeded 109-pounder Emily Shilson (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Mounds View HS), ranked No. 1 in both the WCWA and National Wrestling Coaches Association’s NCAA national rankings, opened her tournament run in style, scoring a takedown and converting four 2-point rolls in quick succession, ending her first-round match against Angela LoRusso of Adrian (Mich.) in just 30 seconds with a 10-0 technical fall. In Shilson’s second match, she had to advance to the second period for only the first time in her eight collegiate matches this season. She led 8-0 after the first period, then got a takedown and converted it into a pin 19 seconds into the second period over Aylen Bivar of Texas Wesleyan. Shilson is now 8-0 with three pins and three technical falls.
Top-seeded 123-pounder Vayle-Rae Baker (FY, Benton, Pa./Wyoming Seminary), ranked No. 1 in the WCWA and No. 5 in the NWCA/NCAA, also had a technical fall and pin in her two matches to improve to 15-2 on the year. She claimed her sixth first-period pin of the season in her opening match, a 2:16 match-ender over Kamille Beagel of Schreiner (Texas). In the quarterfinals, she scored her sixth technical fall victory, a 12-2 triumph in 3:53 over Kassidy Block of Adian. She scored 10 straight points after the match was tied 2-2 halfway through the first period, with a takedown just before the break, then two takedowns and two 2-point rolls in the first minute of the second period.
At 130 pounds, No. 2-seed Gabby Skidmore (FY, Spooner, Wis./Cumberland HS) went 3-0 on Friday to reach the semifinals. She ended her preliminary match with Krystal Fabricante of Eastern Oregon with a pin in just 32 seconds, then needed just 1:15 to score a pin over Dallas Gomez of Grays Harbor College (Wash.). In her quarterfinal against No. 7-seed Clarissa Archuleta of Texas Wesleyan, Skidmore claimed an 8-0 victory, leading 2-0 after one period and scoring three takedowns in the second period to improve to 10-2 on the season. She now has four pins and three technical falls among her 10 wins.
As a team, Augsburg stands in eighth place in the tournament with 46.5 points. Campbellsville (Ky.) leads the tournament with 134.5 points and has 11 wrestlers in championship contention, while host Life (Ga.) is in second with 78 points, with six wrestlers in the championship bracket, and Jamestown (N.D.) is in third place with 74 points, with two wrestlers in title contention and five in consolation brackets. Oklahoma City (Okla.) is in fourth place with 62.5 points, with four wrestlers in title contention and one in consolations. Augsburg and sixth-place Tiffin (Ohio) both have three wrestlers in title contention.
Three Auggies fell just a match short of securing All-American honors with top-eight finishes. At 143 pounds, Kahlea Jolly (FY, Lino Lakes, Centennial HS) claimed an upset win in her opener, pinning No. 6-seed Grace Miller of Umpqua Community College (Ore.) in 1:07 in her opening match, but she suffered first period pins in both her quarterfinal and consolation match to be eliminated.
At 130, Savannah Vold (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) was pinned in her opening match, but then scored two impressive victories — a 2:31 pin of Delilah Vance of Lakeland (Wis.) and a 6-2 win over Cassidy O’Hara of Grays Harbor — before dropping a 7-1 decision to end her tournament run.
After an 8-2 loss in her opener, Bel Snyder (SO, Deer Creek, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek HS) scored a 1:55 pin of Mikayla Vega of Gannon (Pa.), avenging a pin loss to Vega earlier this season. Snyder was eliminated with a pin loss in her next match.
Auggie 155-pounder Marlynne Deede (FY, Springville, Utah/Springville HS) and 170-pounder Melissa Jacobs (FY, Belle Plaine, Minn./Belle Plaine HS (Scott West)) were both eliminated with losses in both their matches on Friday.
Semifinal action begins at 8 a.m. for the three remaining Augsburg wrestlers on Saturday (1/8).
