The Gophers dropped another tough dual on the road to the top-five ranked Iowa Hawkeyes last Friday. The Gophers dropped the dual 34-7, with victories coming from Brandon Krone and Mitch McKee. Krone defeated No. 20 Mitch Bowman, while McKee picked up a victory against Paul Glynn. The Gophers dropped a few close matches in the dual, including a top-10 matchup at 165-pounds, and Chris Pfarr, both matches ending in a 5-1 decision for Iowa.

” We knew coming in it would be a tough match,” head coach Brandon Eggum said after the dual. “Especially with a few guys out of the lineup. I’m proud of some of the guys that stepped in. We have a couple of tough duals coming up, so we’ll be able to see if some of these guys can continue to improve and go out and wrestle like we know they are capable.”

The Gophers will make their final appearance on the Big Ten Network this season when they take on the Maryland Terripans in College Park, Md. The Gophers last faced Maryland in 2016 when Minnesota prevailed 26-12 at home.

After two weeks at 197-pounds, the Gophers made the move to put Brandon Krone at 184-pounds against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The move payed off, giving Minnesota four team points at that weight, while redshirt freshman Dylan Anderson moved from 184-pounds to 197-pounds and gave No. 7 Cash Wilcke a run for his money, dropping the match 10-7.

The Scarlet Knights bring in five ranked wrestlers to Friday’s showdown at the RAC. Highlighted by No. 1 Nick Suriano, the Gophers will bring five ranked wrestlers, highlighted by No. 6 Ethan Lizak and No. 8 Nick Wanzek. Lizak could get the call at 125-pounds against Suriano. The two did face in 2016 when the Gophers lost to Suriano’s former team, Penn State. The match ended with Suriano defeated Lizak by decision, 8-6. Wanzek will also have his hands full, as he has all season, at 165-pounds. No. 11 Richie Lewis will take the mat for Rutgers, the two have not faced before. Krone will look to win his second straight ranked match when he wrestles No. 12 Nicholas Gravina at 184-pounds.

The match against Maryland on Sunday will be just the second time this season the Gophers wrestle on Friday and Sunday on the road. Maryland comes in with just one ranked wrestler, No. 7 Youssif Hemida at heavyweight. Maryland does boast two other former NCAA Qualifiers though. At 149-pounds, Alfred Bannister will wrestle and then at 141-pounds, Tommy Thorn could potentially wrestle Ryan Diehl who made the NCAA Tournament in 2017.

Minnesota will take part in the Big Ten Tournament coming up on March 3-4. The tournament will take place in East Lansing, Mich.

The Gophers will remain on the road for the remainder of the season. Minnesota will take on some tough opponents for the rest of the season, with two of the final four against currently ranked opponents in Rutgers and Rider. is your home for Gopher Wrestling news.
