Freshmen Lead SJU Wrestling at Luther Open
DECORAH, Iowa – Thirteen Saint John’s wrestling student-athletes competed at the Luther Open on Saturday, Nov. 12, in Decorah, Iowa.
The tournament boasted a number of wrestlers from strong programs, including Division I Iowa, Division II MSU-Mankato, II Upper Iowa, No. 1 Wartburg (Iowa), No. 6 Wisconsin-La Crosse and No. 15 Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Freshman Noah Becker (Browerville, Minn.) led SJU with a 4-2 record, which was good for a fourth-place finish in the silver bracket at 133 pounds. He bounced back with an 8-3 win but fell to Iowa’s Jack Wagner, 19-9, in the third-place match.
Freshman Andrew Smith (Amery, Wis.) wrestled in the same bracket as Becker and posted a 2-2 record. He, like Becker, fell to the Hawkeyes’ Jake Wagner.
