News on WWE Championship, Singh Brothers, Rockstar Spud Update

AJ Styles managed to end Jinder Mahal’s unexpected and lengthy run as WWE Champion during last night’s Smackdown when he defeated him to win his second WWE Championship. Dave Meltzer discussed the result of the match on Wrestling Observer Radio. Declining ratings and the lack of interest for a Brock Lesnar vs. Jinder Mahal match at Survivor Series are said to have caused the title switch last night. The idea to have John Cena be the referee for the Jinder Mahal vs. Brock Lesnar match was only going to be done as a way to setup an eventual championship match between Cena and Mahal. Now that Styles is the champion, Cena will be joining Team Smackdown at Survivor Series. There is speculation that Jinder could win the title back though during WWE’s upcoming tour in India.
As mentioned previously, Jinder Mahal is no longer the WWE Champion. Mahal won the title in May and managed to hold onto it until last night’s Smackdown show. AJ Styles was crowned champion last night after hitting a Phenomenal Forearm on Jinder. The Singh Brothers were unable to assist Mahal in the match like the usually do, so Mahal unexpectedly decided to take out his frustrations on one of the two brothers. After the show went off the air, Mahal proceeded to walk to the back, but then he ran one of the Singh Brothers right into the barricade by the ramp. Jinder had been set to face Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series, but AJ Styles has taken his place now that he is champion.

It was reported a few weeks ago that Rockstar Spud was granted his release from Impact Wrestling. Reports of interest from WWE began to circulate not long after his release was reported, and it was said that the company reportedly wanted to feature him on either 205 Live or their planned weekly UK series. PWInsider reports that Spud will be joining the company once his visa paperwork has been finalized. Dixie Carter posted a photo of Impact staff and roster members celebrating Spud’s farewell from the company before he heads back to the UK while his paperwork is being completed. It is being said that Spud will be joining the 205 Live roster.

So great to see this crew tonight. #MadRespect @RockstarSpud @JamesStormBrand @JeremyBorash @brydertna @JohnGaburick #Conway
