Kairi Sane Wins Mae Young Classic, Fighting for NXT Women’s Title

Once this week’s edition of Smackdown concluded, the final match of the Mae Young Classic tournament finally occurred. The finals saw Kairi Sane take on Shayna Baszler to win the tournament and the Mae Young Classic trophy. After about twelve minutes or so, Kairi Sane managed to pull out the win after hitting the Insane Elbow Drop on Baszler. Ronda Rousey and Jessamyn Duke were both in attendance to support Baszler. Bayley, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Asuka, Summer Rae, Mauro Ranallo, Beth Phoenix, Lillian Garcia, Michelle McCool, Ata Johnson (the mother of The Rock), Alundra Blayze, and others also appeared on the show.
In the end though, Kairi Sane had her hand raised as the victor by Triple H and Stephanie McMahon in the ring. The ending of the tournament also confirmed earlier reports that the winner would not be crowned NXT Women’s Champion. Despite the fact that the title is currently vacant, Kairi Sane is signed to WWE, and some rumors suggesting that it would be on the line, Sane was not given the title. Shortly before the match began, however, Pro Wrestling Sheet’s James McKenna posted on Twitter that the tournament winner would be getting a shot at the NXT Women’s Championship as part of a multi-woman match that would be taking place at a later time.
Later on, WWE.com and ESPN each posted articles confirming that Sane is indeed in line to challenge for the vacant title. The title was previously held by Asuka, who held the title for over 500 days without ever being officially beaten for the belt. Asuka is now currently dealing with a collarbone injury, and she is also going to be moving to Raw once she has recovered from the injury, thus prompting her to vacate the title. Triple H confirmed in the new article that Sane is going to be challenging an unnamed opponent for the title at NXT Takeover: Houston. The show is going to be taking place in November over Survivor Series weekend.
