Dragon’s Novak and Joseph Win Titles at Jimmie Open

JAMESTOWN, N.D. — Freshman Shane Novak and junior Michael Joseph each won their respective weight classes to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team at the Jimmie Open, which was held on Saturday in Jamestown, N.D.

No team scores were kept at the meet.

Novak, competing unattached at 125 pounds, went 3-0 on the day. He opened with a pin of Phillip Johnson (unattached) in 1:41, and followed with a 6-4 win over Hunter Menendez of Mary. In the finals, he pinned Dickinson State’s Deshun Haynes in 3:56. Novak is now 5-5 on the year.

Joseph, who leads the Dragons with a 16-6 mark so far, went 4-0 on the day to claim the title at 174 pounds. He beat Mary’s John Devito, 6-3 to open the tournament and then beat Vaughn Monreal-Berner of Southwest Minnesota State by technical fall (21-4). He then topped Tyler Brown of Dickinson State in the semifinals, 5-3 and then beat Tiger Paasch of Minot State by injury default in the championship.

Senior Matt Lewellen (14-6) continued his strong start to the season with a runner-up finish at 184 pounds. He opened with a 6-2 win over Lane Oversen and then won by pin in the second round. He beat Andrew Rodas of SMSU, 8-5 before falling to Travis Peralta of SMSU, 7-6 in the finals.

Junior Connor Monk (4-6) placed fourth at 174 pounds after going 3-2 on the day. He opened with a pin of SMSU’s Ashton Bartlett in 1:39, and then beat unattached wrestler Michael Nord by technical fall in 17-0. Monk lost to Paasch, 12-5 in the semifinals and then won by disqualification in the consolation semifinals. Monk was pinned by Dickinson State’s Brown in the third-place match.

Freshmen Tyler Schlosser (197 pounds) and Kyle Johnson (competing unattached at 285) each went 3-2 at their respective weight classes and placed fifth.

Next action for MSUM is the Dragon Open, which will be held Dec. 7 at Nezmek Fieldhouse in Moorhead. More than a dozen teams are expected to compete at the event, which is the first home action for the Dragons.
